  | | Steroseismology: (from
the colloquium talk by Prof. Jianning Fu on May 31, 2007 at ASIAA)
      | | Steroseismology of stars can be divided
into two classes: P mode and G mode seismology. In P
mode, the  restoring force of pulsation is dominated by
pressure, while in G mode, the restoring
force of pulsation is dominated by gravity. The P mode usually happens
near the stellar surface, while the G mode usually occurs in the
interior of a star. Whether the pulsation of a star is dominated by G
mode or P mode depends on the mass (equivalently gravity g) and stellar
structure (density, temperature, convection, and so on). | | | Observabales such as the pulsation modes,
        period distribution, strength
of different modes, etc. can be used to constrain the mass (or
gravity), structure of a star, under the help of stellar pulsation
simulation. | | | Steroseismology can be well studied for main
        sequence stars and white dwarfs
(WD). According to observations, main sequency stars like our sun are
dominated by P mode, while WDs are dominated by G mode. | | |
