LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope)

First light: scheduled for 2013.

Lifetime
: 10 years (each sky location would be observed about 1000 times);

Survey: LSST will cover the entire available sky every three nights in two photometric bands to a depth of V=25 per visit (two 15 second exposures), with exquisitely accurate astrometry and photometry.

Constraining Dark Energy and Dark Matter
Taking an Inventory of the Solar System
Exploring the Transient Optical Sky
Mapping the Milky Way

Advantages for AGB research:

Optical counterpart identification in the whole Galaxy scale
Search for spatially resolved envelopes (say, supply more examples as IRC +10216)
Color selection of much more (fainter) AGB sample stars
Optical variability of AGB stars (~ 1000 observations over 10 years)
